With an increased awareness of competitive combat sports, gyms/dojos have an increased number of members, young and old joining. These are also sports which result in multiple orthopedic injuries.  One of the fastest immerging combat sports in the US is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ.  Today, BJJ is one of the fastest growing sports among youth and adults looking to get in shape and learn self-defense.  BJJ is a grappling sport that is entails take downs and a ground game that results in multiple submissions by joint manipulation (head to toe) or submission by chokes.  With the growth of this sport comes an increasingly complex athlete with a complex presentation that ends up walking into physician offices and clinics.  Understanding the basics of the sport not only builds confidence in the athlete but also allows clinicians to develop treatment protocols that allows the athlete to return to sport fully prepared and ready to return to this highly demanding sport.

2. Review the terminology associated with grappling sport and the positions and techniques associated with them.

5. Discuss some common weaknesses in grapplers that lead to injury.
